There's something I need to get off my chest.
I was surprised by how much I did not enjoy Uncharted 3.
I will elaborate. Uncharted 2 was amazing. We all know that. It was funny, action-packed, indescribably beautiful, well-paced, easy to understand yet engaging. It hit all the right notes.
I will tell you why though it struck particularly with me. It reminded me of when I was a kid.
I loved exploring. My parents didn't. They would be worried I would get hurt and wouldn't let me go to all kinds of places. They would keep me in the house. I used TV and video games to escape (sometimes books, but I preferred being involved).
Watching my brothers play games like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie made me yearn for a game which took me to all kinds of environments, with all the colours of the rainbow, on a epic quest which I was part of the whole time. Uncharted 2 did this masterfully. The museums, the jungle, the city, the rooftops, the train, the caves, the monastery, Shambhala... so good. Adventure porn even.
I also liked the fact that Drake would change his clothes. Yep sounds weird I know. But it reminded me again of when I was a kid. The different action figures. We have "Nepal Drake" and "Winter Drake" and had epic gun battles in each. I want Nathan Drake action figures. It was pure fun.
And the story? SIMPLE. I love games like Metal Gear Solid but sometimes simple stories are just as good. Look no further than the games of Team ICO to know what I mean.
So we go into Uncharted 3, having massive expectations. I was let down.
